7.10 Recommendations
7.10.1 Writtle
Consider informal collaboration with existing uPortal sites (eg. Hull, Nottingham, DMU) who might help  you in the task of re-skinning the core GIMIS components in return for early access to your framework  (which they could then test against their local back-end systems).
7.10.2 Ravensbourne
Recognise that building a portal is becoming relatively easy but that running it successfully (in  performance terms) is something that has still to be learned by the sector. There are about equal  measures of interest and ignorance in the area of load-balancing (which has become standard practise  in the commercial sector). JISC should consider funding projects that investigate and distill best practise  in this area. Resin is already in use at a number of sites but it is unknown whether its load-balancing  features are being used.
7.10.3 Sunderland
In the open source arena there are few alternatives to Java-based portal frameworks such as uPortal and  Jetspeed; Zope is one of these. Opinions vary as to whether Zope is "ready for the enterprise"; its role as  a lightweight tool for rapid Web application development is not in question. Moreover, for the time being,  the Java world cannot yet compete with Zope's content management capabilities. Given the growth of  interest and use of Zope across both the state and commercial sectors in the rest of Europe (e.g.  http://changeursdemonde.freezope.org/EuroZopeSites/all_countries) it may
be desirable for JISC to continue to back two horses in the area of open source portal and content  management frameworks.
