With the increasing development of regional partnerships between further education and higher  education institutions and the importance of support for progression there is a need for systems at  the various partner members to be able to exchange data automatically as required.  This means  that all the members of the partnership need to be working towards a common solution to this  problem.  Typically this will be done by the use of open standards, though if all partners agree to  some alternative solution that too is possible.
